There are many reasons people are overweight. It is too simple to say “overweight people just eat too much.” This is probably true. However, success is not as simple as cutting back on calories or exercising more. If being overweight is do to emotional or psychological reasons, then dieting won’t work until you heal the underlying causes.
This isn’t permission to go on an eating spree. Rather, it is an invitation to look deeper than the surface.
Why are you eating? Are you stressed out? Burning that candle at both ends. So you think you need that 2 pm frappe to wake you up and get through another stressful afternoon! Did you have a fight with your partner and plate up fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy and buttered biscuits to soothe the pain?
Ouch! So life isn’t working. Rather than making choices that will help, one may make eating choices that actually deaden pain and move the body towards disease. (Splendid!)
Emotional triggers such as stress, sadness, depression and so on can all make a person want to eat more food. This is due to the fact that there are certain chemicals in the brain that are linked to both mood and hunger. Emotions can drive a person to starve her self or over eat. This is two sides of the same coin. But my guess is, if you are reading this blog, you are falling into the eating too much category.
We associate eating with different emotions. Lets face it, some foods are comfort foods. Mac and cheese is a great one for me personally. What is a comfort food for me may not be a comfort food to you.
A person can eat more food to make them feel better, happier or comforted when they are stressed or in emotional pain. If this behavior is a component of you eating, get help. Talk with a counselor about the underlying problems and come to some resolution. It will make you new diet plan much more successful.
