I was hungry this afternoon but I had some errands. I wanted a quick and healthy meal I could take with me. Smoothies fill the bill. This smoothie recipe is so much healthier than shakes that come in a can or powder mix, because it is whole foods. There is nothing like eating whole wholesome food.
You can do a smoothie with all fruit or all veggies. I usually do a variety. Here is what I did today.
- 1/2 banana
- 1/2 apple
- 4 small snack carrots
- 1/2 stalk of celery
- 1/3 cup frozen berries
- 1/2 cup kefir
- 1 oz frozen wheatgrass
- 1 free range organic egg
- 4 ice cubes
- filtered water to desired consistency
Blend in VITA MIX (or other good blender) until smooth.
There are 3 servings of fruit, and 3 vegetable servings. There is protein in the egg. Yes you can eat eggs raw. I do it all the time. You will need to choose local farm fresh free range organic eggs.
The kefir offers about 5-6 grams of protein. The key feature of Kefir is the probiotics it offers. Lifeway organic Kefir has 10 live and active cultures. The little guys in this culture include L casei, L lactis, L acidophilus, L plantarum, L rhamnosus, B bacterium longum, Leuconostoc cremoris, B bacterium breve, S diacstylactis, and S florentinus.
Probiotics are critical to the health of our gut and by default our health. In my mind, kefir is far and way superior to yogurt, which I also like.
Wheatgrass is a super food. It packs a wallop in alkalizing the blood, provides all kinds of enzymes and so much more. I think I will devote a whole article on wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass must be eaten raw. Cooking will destroy all the nutrients.
Commit to eating healthy. Make your own fruit and veggie smoothies. It will help you attain and maintain health and healthy weight. Enjoy!
